We must all bear in mind that you’re Savannah kitten will be leaving the only home they knew, their mum, security and general surroundings for the first time.  These kittens have no idea that we intend taking care of them in an environment they will come to love.  Until they feel that sense of security, we need to be really patient and cautious of their needs.

To help your Savannah kitten manage this situation, we will not release them from their birth environment until they are 13 weeks old.  By this time, their mother would have weaned them, taught them how to play, use the litter tray and tidy themselves.

When the new Savannah kitten arrives home, try to carry out the safety precautions you would generally take when an infant is around and ensures all windows and doors to your new home are closed.  Remember, your kitten will investigate every situation.
Initially, introduce your Savannah kitten to a very small room where it is easy for it to become acquainted with.  A few basic but important reminders are to avoid changing the food your new kitten previously ate and ensure a clean
litter tray, feeding and water bowls are placed in the room so that it can easily be reached by your kitten.

Avoid placing any litter trays near feeding areas so as to maintain appropriate hygiene habits

inform all children that your new Savannah kitten should not be picked up until the kitten feels safe enough to freely approach them in its own time.  They must stop playing with the kitten if it gets distress.

Try to spend every hour you can with your Savannah Kitten.  It may ignore you at first, but this will only happen for a short while until you both become friends.  Try not to let your kitten venture from the small environment until it is comfortable with you, your family and new home.  This will usually take around two to three days.  If you force your Savannah kitten to widen out too soon, litter tray accidents could occur!  This will only happen if it has lost it's way, or the litter tray needs cleaning.

Do make all efforts to keep your litter trays clear of solids at all times.  Disinfect the litter tray weekly and leave it to dry before re-use.

In no time, your Savannah Kitten will be comfortable in it's new home.  As it grows, it will become very active so please do allow plenty of time to play with them.

Savannah kittens will all be vaccinated and litter trained before you collect them.  You will also receive Six weeks free Pet Plan Insurance to commence the day you collect your kitten.  Please try to continue this insurance without a break for your own peace of mind. Always remember your Savannah kitten is not a matured cat and some times, all the stress of the move to it's new home could cause an upset stomach.  To avoid added stress we suggest you keep your Savannah kittens on the same food their digestive systems are accustomed to and if this problem occurs, it should disappear in a few days or so.  If it does not, please take your Savannah Kitten to the Vet for further advice.  In the meantime, ensure your kitten has plenty of fresh water available and constant access to a clean private litter tray.

Consider retaining the same cat litter we recommended as a litter change might confuse your Savannah Kitten.  We do not recommend clumping litter for any kitten.  It could stick to their feet which they will attempt to lick off, and could result in an impacted stomach, (should this incident ever occur, please take your kitten to a vet immediately).

We use a Comfey Pet pine pellet litter.

Your new Savannah Kitten will anxiously want to explore its new home and family.  In the process of doing so, they might soon forget the litter tray when in a hurry and accidents might occur.  This will not be their intention and hence, it is recommended that you keep at least two litter trays in the house, one on each floor.  Start with, a full hooded litter tray without the lid.  This could prevent unwanted accidents.

If your Savannah Kitten is reluctant to use the tray it may be for a number of reasons.  Some of those reasons could be because:-

1. It is too small
2. It is not clean
3. It is too near their food bowls·
4. It was cleaned with a chemical that is too strong smelling
5. Your kitten does not like the texture of the litter you have chosen.

Try to keep your Savannah kitten in a small room until it is confident and feels safe.  You will know when it is ready to take on other challenges as the kitten will come running to you as you enter the room.  Keep a watch on your kitten.  If it seems to be in distress and constantly wondering from corner to corner, pick it up and place it in the litter tray.  Repeat this action until it can find the litter tray on its own.

At all times food, water, a cosy bed and a litter tray should be in easy reach of your kitten. This will ensure little or no accidents and good litter tray habits.

Finding a Good Breeder

Know what you are looking for

Attend CAT SHOWS if at all possible; talk to the various breeders.  Ask them if they recommend anyone in your area

VISIT the cattery, if at all possible.  Fancy websites, show champions, etc. do not necessarily make for a good breeder.  Visit and take care to note the health and care given to the cats and kittens, their personalities, and the cleanliness of the cattery including food and water bowels and litterboxes, etc.

1.Good breeders NEVER sell their kittens to brokers, pet stores, flea markets, etc.

2.Good breeders stand behind their cats and kittens for the life-time of the Savannah

3.Good breeders don't ALWAYS have kittens on hand and you often have to be put on a waiting list.

4.Good breeders will almost never breed more than two breeds, and usually only one.

5.Good breeders do not let their kittens go to new homes before ten weeks of age.

6.Good breeders socialize their kittens.

Good breeders are proud to show you the parents of the kittens, if both are owned by the breeder, and are also happy to show off the cattery and its cats -- excluding of course young kits.  They will also produce pedigrees and health information.

7.Good breeders breed only to improve their line or their breed, not for the sole purpose of making money.

8.Good breeders will speak honestly with you about the positive and negative aspects of the Savannah breed.  They will not tell you the Savannah is the perfect cat for everyone.

9.Good breeders will speak frankly about health / genetic concerns in the breed or line.

10.Good breeders truly love their cats, and treat them as pets first, taking the very best care of them that they can.
